Club Chairs
The History of Club Chairs
A club chairs is usually an upholstered chair that is made of some kind of fabric or leather that has arms. Normally made to match a sofa or other piece of furniture it usually is covered with the same material as the furniture that is being matched. A club chair is the modern name for a wing chair. Club chairs are a popular option for office and home furnishing that comes from the middle of the 19th century. A club chair has an ample seat and a low back and is designed for comfort. It was most popular in the high-end gentlemans clubs of Great Britain and the United Kingdom and demanded a masculine style for which these clubs are known for. The club chair gained popularity through a large part of the 20th century and is still popular today.
During the 1850s the club chair was first created to be used exclusively in mens club. The idea of the club chair was to be large enough to allow a man with a large build to sit in them comfortably. In the 1850s the well to do men were of large stature and many of furniture pieces that that was created during this time were not comfortable for them nor did they have ample support for these large men. These styling of the chair was very masculine and would not lean itself towards the feminine taste whatsoever. Sturdy leather and hardwoods were the basics of the club chair and still remain so today. Club chairs were used around the coffee table for conversation and if a game of cards was to come up, they could be quickly arranged around a card table to keep the players in comfort while they play their game.
At the beginning of the 20th century restaurants started using club chairs and mens clubs or not the only one who uses them. Other uses were found for these club chairs and other venues began to use them. Libraries and home offices took on the domestic quality of the club chair and moved them from the mens club and restaurants to family dens and libraries. In the home environment club chairs were arranged around tables to give a stylish casual dining area in the home. Now that the club chairs are in the home they took on a different design and style. Lighter leather dyes were used on the club chairs exterior to accent the core of the home and lighter colored wood were used to let the ladies give the club chair a feminine accent.
Today the club chair is a favorite of upscale and casual restaurants and other dining venues. It is also popular around the home when you want a rustic but solid design for your house furnishings. The club chair has comfortable padding and simple lines that are creatively designed to make them easily work into the many decorating styles that are evident today. Though created for the masculine look many club chairs have a feminine quality that will allow the chair to be used by either gender and by either gender tastes.
